Generic Composition:
-
Glimepiride 1 mg (Sulfonylurea)
-
Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg (Biguanide)
-
Voglibose 0.2 mg (Alpha-glucosidase inhibitor)
Category: Oral Anti-Diabetic (Triple Combination)
Description:
Glycomet Trio 1 Tablet is a triple-drug combination used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and monotherapy or dual therapy do not provide adequate control.
-
Glimepiride stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, lowering blood sugar.
-
Metformin reduces liver glucose production, slows glucose absorption from the intestines, and improves insulin sensitivity.
-
Voglibose delays the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine, thus preventing post-meal blood sugar spikes.
Together, these three agents provide comprehensive blood sugar control by targeting multiple mechanisms.
Uses:
-
Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
-
Controls fasting and postprandial glucose levels
-
Helps reduce risk of diabetes-related complications like neuropathy, kidney disease, retinopathy, and heart disease
Mechanism of Action:
-
Glimepiride (1 mg): Increases insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells → lowers blood sugar
-
Metformin (500 mg): Reduces hepatic glucose output, improves insulin sensitivity, slows intestinal glucose absorption
-
Voglibose (0.2 mg): Inhibits alpha-glucosidase enzyme → slows carbohydrate digestion → lowers post-meal glucose surge
-
Combined effect: Strong glycemic control across fasting and post-meal sugars
Dosage & Administration:
-
Usually 1 tablet once or twice daily with meals (as prescribed by doctor)
-
Take just before meals for maximum effect (due to Voglibose action)
-
Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew
-
Regular monitoring of blood glucose and HbA1c is required
Common Side Effects:
-
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – sweating, dizziness, shakiness, hunger
-
Nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset (Metformin-related)
-
Flatulence, bloating, abdominal discomfort (Voglibose-related)
-
Headache, weakness
Serious Side Effects (rare):
-
Lactic acidosis (Metformin): muscle pain, fatigue, breathing difficulty
-
Severe hypoglycemia (especially if skipping meals or during heavy exercise)
-
Liver problems – yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine
-
Severe allergic reactions – rash, swelling, breathing difficulty
Warnings & Precautions:
-
Not for Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
-
Avoid in severe kidney or liver disease
-
Use cautiously in patients with gastrointestinal problems (due to Voglibose)
-
Avoid alcohol (increases risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia)
-
Regular monitoring of blood sugar, kidney, and liver function is essential
