Uses / Indications

Cefakind 500 Tablet is prescribed for treatment of bacterial infections, such as:

• Respiratory tract infections: pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis

• Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) infections

• Urinary tract infections (UTI)

• Skin & soft tissue infections

• Bone & joint infections

• Sexually transmitted infections (e.g., gonorrhea)

• Post-surgical infections

Mechanism of Action

• Cefuroxime (2nd generation Cephalosporin antibiotic):

  • Binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) of bacteria

  • Inhibits cell wall synthesis → weakens bacterial cell wall → causes bacterial death (bactericidal)

• Broad spectrum: effective against both Gram-positive & Gram-negative bacteria

Dosage & Administration

• Adults: 250–500 mg twice daily (every 12 hours), as prescribed

• Children: Dose based on body weight (pediatric syrup preferred)

• Best taken after meals to improve absorption

• Duration: usually 5–14 days, depending on infection type

• Swallow whole with water – do not crush or chew

Side Effects

• Common: nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache

• Rare: skin rash, dizziness, liver enzyme changes, oral/vaginal fungal infection (candida overgrowth)

• Severe (rare): allergic reaction, Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea
