Metrogyl Injection (Metronidazole 500 mg/100 ml) is an antiprotozoal and antianaerobic medicine used in the treatment of severe anaerobic infections, amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and for surgical infection prophylaxis.

Uses / Indications

  • Severe anaerobic bacterial infections (when oral therapy not possible)

    • Intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, abscess)

    • Pelvic infections (endometritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, vaginal vault sepsis)

    • Skin & soft tissue, bone & joint anaerobic infections

    • Septicemia caused by anaerobes

    • CNS infections (meningitis, brain abscess)

  • Protozoal infections (severe cases)

    • Amoebiasis (incl. liver abscess)

    • Giardiasis

    • Trichomoniasis

  • Surgical prophylaxis

    • Prevention of anaerobic infections during colorectal, gynecological, and abdominal surgery


Dosage (General Guidance)

(Strictly under physician’s supervision)

  • Adults (IV): 500 mg infused over 20–60 minutes every 8 hours

  • Maximum daily dose: 4 g

  • Children: 7.5 mg/kg every 8 hrs (IV infusion)

  • Duration depends on severity & clinical response

Route: Intravenous infusion (slow); rarely intramuscular in emergency


Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, metallic taste

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Thrombophlebitis at injection site

  • Dark-colored urine (harmless)

  • Rare: Peripheral neuropathy, seizures, allergic reactions, leukopenia


Precautions / Warnings

  • Avoid alcohol during & 48 hrs after therapy (disulfiram-like reaction)

  • Caution in liver & kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be needed)

  • Avoid in first trimester of pregnancy unless essential

  • Crosses placenta & enters breast milk → consult doctor if breastfeeding

  • Monitor patients with neurological disorders (risk of neuropathy, seizures)


Drug Interactions

  • Alcohol (severe reaction)

  • Warfarin (↑ anticoagulant effect)

  • Lithium (↑ serum levels)

  • Disulfiram (psychotic reactions)

  • Phenytoin/Phenobarbital (↓ metronidazole effect)

  • Cimetidine (↑ plasma levels)
