Uses / Indications

Ciplar 40mg Tablet is prescribed for:

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • Angina (chest pain due to reduced blood supply to the heart)

  • Arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms)

  • Prevention of Migraine headaches

  • Anxiety (performance anxiety, palpitations, tremors)

  • Thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid symptoms)

  • Post-heart attack care – reduces recurrence risk & improves survival


Mechanism of Action

  • Propranolol is a Non-selective Beta-Blocker.

  • Blocks Beta-1 (heart) and Beta-2 (lungs, blood vessels) receptors.

  • Reduces heart rate & contractility → lowers BP and cardiac workload.

  • Improves oxygen supply-demand balance in the heart → relieves angina.

  • Controls adrenaline-related anxiety symptoms and tremors.


Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose: 40–160 mg daily (in divided doses).

  • 40 mg may be given once or twice daily depending on condition.

  • Take with or after food to avoid gastric irritation.

  • Swallow whole with water.

  • Do not stop suddenly – may cause rebound hypertension, angina, or arrhythmia.


Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Dizziness, fatigue

  • Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)

Serious but rare:

Drug Interactions

  • Insulin/antidiabetic medicines (may mask low sugar symptoms)

  • NSAIDs (reduce antihypertensive effect)
