Uses / Indications

Clarithro Dry Syrup 30 ml is prescribed for children (pediatric use) in conditions like:

  • Respiratory tract infections – pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia

  • Ear infections – otitis media

  • Skin & soft tissue infections – cellulitis, impetigo, abscess

  • Helicobacter pylori infection (as part of triple therapy in children, under specialist guidance)

  • Mycobacterial infections in special pediatric cases (HIV/immunocompromised children)


Mechanism of Action

  • Clarithromycin (Macrolide antibiotic):

    • Binds to 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria

    • Inhibits protein synthesis → stops bacterial growth

    • Active against Gram-positive, Gram-negative & atypical bacteria


Dosage & Administration

  • Children: Typically 7.5 mg/kg twice daily, or as per pediatrician’s advice

  • Reconstitution:

    • Add boiled & cooled water up to the marked line → shake well to form uniform suspension

    • Shake well before each dose

  • Administer using provided measuring spoon/cup

  • Give after meals to minimize stomach upset

  • Once reconstituted, use within 7–10 days; store in refrigerator if advised


Side Effects

  • Common: nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, bitter/metallic taste

  • Rare: rash, liver enzyme elevation, dizziness, irregular heartbeat (QT prolongation)

  • Severe (rare): persistent diarrhea (C. difficile infection)


Precautions & Warnings

  • Use strictly under pediatrician’s prescription

  • Not useful for viral infections (cold, flu)

  • Caution in children with liver or kidney problems

  • Avoid if allergic to macrolides (erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin)

  • Discard leftover syrup after expiry of usage period
