Description: Mikacin 500 mg Injection contains Amikacin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby killing bacteria. It is highly effective against severe Gram-negative bacterial infections and is given under hospital/doctor supervision.

Uses:

• Pneumonia & respiratory tract infections

• Urinary tract infections (UTI)

• Bloodstream infections (septicemia)

• Abdominal infections (peritonitis, intra-abdominal sepsis)

• Bone & joint infections

• Skin & soft tissue infections

• Post-operative and hospital-acquired infections

Dosage & Administration:

• Adults: 15 mg/kg/day in 2–3 divided doses (usual 500 mg every 12 hours).

• Children: 15–20 mg/kg/day in divided doses.

• Neonates: As per weight and age.

• Route: IV infusion or IM injection.

Side Effects: Kidney toxicity (nephrotoxicity), ear toxicity (ototoxicity – hearing loss, ringing), injection site pain, nausea, rash, dizziness.

Precautions:

• Use cautiously in kidney disease, hearing problems, or neuromuscular disorders.

• Monitor kidney function, hearing, and drug levels during therapy.

• Pregnancy/lactation: Use only if prescribed.

Drug Interactions:

• Increased toxicity with other aminoglycosides, vancomycin, amphotericin B, cyclosporine.

• Enhanced neuromuscular blockade with muscle relaxants.

• May interact with loop diuretics (furosemide, ethacrynic acid) → higher risk of hearing damage.
