Uses / Indications

Taxim 1 gm injection is used (under medical supervision) for treatment of various serious bacterial infections,


Dosage & Administration

  • Route: Intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) (depending on situation)

  • Preparation: The powdered form is reconstituted with sterile diluent (sterile water or normal saline).

  • Rate / Infusion:
      – IV injection: the reconstituted solution is typically injected slowly (e.g., over 3–5 minutes)
      – IV infusion: can also be given as a drip over 20–60 minutes depending on protocol. 
      – IM injection: given deep into a large muscle mass.

  • Dose: The dose depends on the infection type, severity, and patient’s renal function. For example, in adults common regimens are 1 g every 6–8 hours for serious infections.

  • Adjustment: In patients with renal impairment, dose reduction or extension of dosing interval may be required.


Side Effects / Adverse Reactions

Common / Frequent

  • Pain, swelling, redness at the injection site (local reactions)

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • Seizures or neurotoxicity (especially in renal impairment or high doses)

  • Superinfection (overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, e.g. fungal infections)


Precautions / Warnings

  • Allergy / Hypersensitivity: Do not use if the patient has known allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporins, or severe penicillin allergy.

  • Renal impairment: Dose modifications may be needed. Monitor kidney function.

  • Liver disease: Use with caution.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed. Consult doctor.

  • Drug interactions:
      – Some drugs (e.g. probenecid) can affect elimination of cefotaxime. 
      – Concomitant nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
