Uses / Indications
Unwanted 72 is used as an emergency contraceptive for:

Preventing unwanted pregnancy after unprotected sex

Preventing pregnancy if regular contraceptive method failed (missed pills, condom break, diaphragm slip, etc.)
Mechanism of Action
-
Levonorgestrel prevents or delays ovulation (release of an egg)

Alters the uterine lining & cervical mucus → reduces chances of fertilization and implantation
-
Most effective when taken within 24 hours, but can work up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected intercourse
-
Does not work if pregnancy is already established
Dosage & Administration

Single dose: 1 tablet as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hrs, maximum within 72 hrs of unprotected sex

Swallow whole with water, with or without food

Not to be used as a regular contraceptive method – only for emergencies
Side Effects

Common: nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, fatigue

Menstrual changes: earlier, later, heavier, or lighter than usual

Abdominal pain or breast tenderness

If vomiting occurs within 2 hours of taking, repeat dose may be required
Precautions & Warnings

Not for routine use as birth control

Does not protect against STDs / HIV

Should not be used in women with severe liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or allergy to Levonorgestrel

If period is delayed by more than 7 days, pregnancy test is recommended

Safe in reproductive-age women, but not advised as frequent contraception method
