Uses / Indications

Aten 100mg Tablet is prescribed for:

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) – especially in patients not controlled by lower doses.

  • Angina (chest pain due to reduced oxygen supply to the heart)

  • Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)

  • Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) – prevention of recurrence & improving survival

  • Heart Failure (in selected cases, with close monitoring)

  • Migraine prevention (off-label use)

  • Anxiety-related palpitations & tremors (off-label use)


Mechanism of Action

  • Atenolol is a Beta-1 Selective Blocker.

  • Slows down the heart rate & reduces the force of contraction → lowers BP.

  • Reduces oxygen demand of the heart → relieves angina.

  • Controls abnormal rhythms and prevents cardiac complications.

  • Provides long-term cardiovascular protection.


Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose: 25–100 mg once daily (may be given in divided doses).

  • 100 mg once daily is the maximum usual dose for hypertension and angina.

  • Should be taken at the same time daily.

  • Can be taken with or without food.

  • Do not discontinue abruptly – may cause rebound hypertension, angina, or arrhythmias.


Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Fatigue, dizziness

  • Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)

  • Cold extremities (hands/feet)

  • Nausea, stomach upset

Serious but rare:

  • Severe low blood pressure or heart rate

  • Shortness of breath (in asthma/COPD patients)

  • Worsening of heart failure

  • Depression, sleep disturbances


Precautions & Warnings

  • Use cautiously in patients with:

    • Asthma/COPD (though selective, may still cause bronchospasm)

    • Diabetes (masks hypoglycemia symptoms)

    • Heart block, severe bradycardia, or heart failure

    • Kidney impairment (dose adjustment needed)

  • Not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless prescribed.

  • Avoid alcohol (may worsen dizziness or drowsiness).

  • Regular monitoring of BP and heart rate is necessary.


Drug Interactions

  • Other antihypertensives (enhanced BP lowering)

  • Antiarrhythmics (digoxin, amiodarone – risk of slow heartbeat)

  • Insulin/antidiabetic drugs (may mask hypoglycemia)

  • NSAIDs (may reduce BP-lowering effect)
