Uses / Indications

Aten 25mg Tablet is prescribed for:

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • Angina (Chest Pain due to reduced blood supply to the heart)

  • Arrhythmias (Irregular Heartbeats)

  • Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) – treatment & prevention of recurrence

  • Heart Failure (in selected patients, as part of combination therapy)

  • Migraine prevention (off-label use)

  • Anxiety-related palpitations (off-label use)


Mechanism of Action

  • Atenolol is a Beta-1 Selective Blocker.

  • Blocks beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart → slows heart rate and reduces contractility.

  • Decreases cardiac output → lowers blood pressure.

  • Reduces oxygen demand of the heart → relieves angina.

  • Stabilizes abnormal heart rhythms.


Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose: 25–100 mg daily (single or divided dose).

  • 25 mg once daily is a common starting dose for hypertension and angina.

  • Take with water, preferably at the same time daily.

  • Can be taken with or without food.

  • Do not stop suddenly – may cause rebound hypertension or angina.


Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Dizziness, tiredness

  • Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)

  • Cold hands and feet

  • Stomach upset, nausea

Serious but rare:

  • Severe low BP or heart rate

  • Breathing difficulty (in asthma/COPD patients)

  • Worsening of heart failure

  • Depression, sleep disturbances


Precautions & Warnings

  • Use cautiously in patients with:

    • Asthma/COPD (though safer than propranolol, may still cause issues)

    • Diabetes (may mask signs of low blood sugar)

    • Heart block or severe bradycardia

    • Kidney impairment (dose adjustment needed)

  • Not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless prescribed.

  • Avoid alcohol (increases dizziness and drowsiness).

  • Regular monitoring of BP and heart rate is required.


Drug Interactions

  • Other antihypertensives (additive effect)

  • Antiarrhythmics (digoxin, amiodarone – risk of bradycardia)

  • Insulin/antidiabetic medicines (may mask low sugar symptoms)

  • NSAIDs (reduce antihypertensive effect)
