Uses / Indications

Betaloc 50mg Tablet is prescribed for:

• Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

• Angina (Chest Pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart)

• Arrhythmias (Irregular Heartbeats)

• Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) – treatment & prevention of recurrence

• Heart Failure – improves survival & reduces risk of hospitalization

• Migraine prevention (off-label use)

Mechanism of Action

• Metoprolol is a Beta-1 Selective Blocker.

• Slows down heart rate and reduces the force of contraction → decreases heart’s oxygen demand.

• Lowers blood pressure by reducing cardiac output.

• Improves blood circulation, reduces angina episodes, and stabilizes heart rhythm.

Dosage & Administration

• Usual adult dose: 50–200 mg daily (divided doses).

• 50 mg once or twice daily is a common maintenance dose.

• Should be taken with food (to enhance absorption).

• Swallow whole with water.

• Do not stop suddenly – may cause rebound hypertension, angina, or arrhythmia.

Side Effects

Common side effects:

• Dizziness, tiredness

• Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)

• Cold hands and feet

• Stomach upset, nausea

Serious but rare:

• Very slow heart rate or heart block

• Breathing difficulty (in asthma/COPD patients)

• Worsening of heart failure

• Severe drop in blood pressure

Precautions & Warnings

• Use cautiously in patients with:

  • Asthma or COPD (may cause bronchospasm)

  • Diabetes (may mask signs of hypoglycemia)

  • Severe heart block or bradycardia

  • Kidney or liver impairment

• Not recommended in pregnancy unless prescribed.

• Avoid alcohol (increases risk of dizziness/drowsiness).

• Regular monitoring of BP and heart rate is advised.

Drug Interactions

• Other antihypertensives (extra BP lowering)

• Antiarrhythmics (digoxin, amiodarone – risk of slow heartbeat)

• Insulin/antidiabetic drugs (may mask low sugar symptoms)

• NSAIDs (reduce antihypertensive effect)
