Composition

Uses / Indications

Ciplar 10mg Tablet is prescribed for:

• Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

• Angina (Chest Pain due to heart problems)

• Arrhythmias (Irregular Heartbeats)

• Prevention of Migraine headaches

• Anxiety (performance anxiety, stage fright, palpitations)

• Thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid symptoms like tremors, palpitations)

• Post-heart attack care – reduces risk of further episodes

Mechanism of Action

• Propranolol is a Non-selective Beta-Blocker.

• Blocks both Beta-1 and Beta-2 adrenergic receptors.

• Reduces heart rate, contractility, and cardiac output → lowers BP and relieves angina.

• Controls abnormal heart rhythms.

• Prevents adrenaline-induced anxiety symptoms (palpitations, tremors).

Dosage & Administration

• Usual adult dose: 10–40 mg, 2–3 times daily (depends on condition).

• 10 mg is often the starting dose (especially in anxiety or mild hypertension).

• Take with or immediately after food to reduce stomach irritation.

• Swallow whole with water.

• Do not stop suddenly – may cause rebound hypertension or chest pain.

Side Effects

Common side effects:

• Dizziness, tiredness

• Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)

• Cold hands and feet

• Nausea, stomach upset

• Sleep disturbances, vivid dreams

Serious but rare:

• Breathing difficulty (especially in asthma/COPD patients)

• Severe low heart rate or blood pressure

• Worsening of heart failure

• Low blood sugar symptoms (especially in diabetics)

Precautions & Warnings

• Use with caution in patients with:

  • Asthma/COPD (can cause bronchospasm)

  • Diabetes (masks low sugar symptoms)

  • Heart block, severe bradycardia, or heart failure

  • Kidney or liver problems

• Not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless prescribed.

• Avoid alcohol (increases dizziness).

Drug Interactions

• Other antihypertensives (additive effect)

• Antiarrhythmics (amiodarone, digoxin – risk of bradycardia)
