Uses / Indications

Clarithro 250 Tablet is prescribed for the treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections, such as:

• Respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis

• Ear, nose & throat infections (ENT)

• Skin & soft tissue infections: cellulitis, folliculitis, abscess, wound infections

• Helicobacter pylori infection (as part of combination therapy in peptic ulcer disease)

• Mycobacterial infections (including atypical mycobacteria in HIV patients)

Mechanism of Action

• Clarithromycin (Macrolide antibiotic):

  • Binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria

  • Inhibits protein synthesis → stops bacterial growth (bacteriostatic)

  • Effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and atypical bacteria

Dosage & Administration

• Adults & Children >12 years: Usually 250–500 mg twice daily, depending on severity

• Children (below 12 years): Pediatric syrup formulation preferred

• Duration: typically 7–14 days, as prescribed by doctor

• Take with or without food (preferably after meals to reduce stomach upset)

• Swallow whole with water – do not crush or chew

Side Effects

• Common: nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, headache, metallic taste

• Rare: liver enzyme elevation, rash, dizziness, irregular heartbeat (QT prolongation)

• Severe (rare): antibiotic-associated diarrhea (C. difficile infection)

Precautions & Warnings

• Use only on doctor’s prescription

• Avoid in patients with severe liver disease, kidney problems, or cardiac arrhythmias

• May interact with many medicines (statins, anticoagulants, antiarrhythmics, antifungals, etc.)
