Uses / Indications

• Gynecological Conditions

  • Endometriosis (reduces pain, suppresses endometrial growth)

  • Fibrocystic breast disease (benign breast pain, nodularity)

  • Menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding, off-label use)

• Hematological Disorders

  • Hereditary angioedema (to prevent and reduce frequency/severity of attacks)

Dosage (General Guidance)

• Endometriosis: 200–800 mg/day in divided doses for 3–6 months

• Fibrocystic breast disease: 100–400 mg/day in divided doses

• Hereditary angioedema: 200 mg 2–3 times daily initially, then maintenance 200 mg/day

Side Effects

• Weight gain, acne, oily skin

• Hoarseness/deepening of voice (may be irreversible)

• Hirsutism (excess hair growth)

• Menstrual disturbances (amenorrhea, irregular cycles)

• Mood changes, headache

• Rare: Liver dysfunction, thromboembolism

Precautions / Warnings

• Contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe liver/kidney/heart disease, androgen-dependent tumors

• May cause virilization in women (monitor voice changes, hair growth)

• Regular monitoring of liver function & lipid profile needed in long-term use

• Not recommended in children except in hereditary angioedema under supervision

• May reduce fertility while on treatment

Drug Interactions

• Warfarin (↑ anticoagulant effect)

• Carbamazepine, Cyclosporine, Statins (↑ toxicity risk)

• Insulin/antidiabetic drugs (altered glucose control)
