Description: Gentamicin 80 mg Injection belongs to the aminoglycoside group of antibiotics. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby killing harmful bacteria. It is used in the treatment of serious Gram-negative bacterial infections and is administered only under medical supervision.

Uses:

• Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)

• Urinary tract infections (UTI)

• Bloodstream infections (septicemia)

• Abdominal infections (peritonitis)

• Bone & joint infections

• Skin & soft tissue infections

• Post-operative and hospital-acquired infections

Dosage & Administration:

• Adults: 3–5 mg/kg/day in 2–3 divided doses (usual: 80 mg every 8–12 hrs).

• Children: 3–7.5 mg/kg/day in divided doses.

• Neonates: Dose depends on weight and age.

• Route: IV infusion or IM injection.
  👉 Dose must be adjusted in renal impairment and given strictly under doctor’s advice.

Side Effects: Kidney toxicity (nephrotoxicity), ear damage (ototoxicity – hearing loss, vertigo), injection site pain, nausea, dizziness, skin rash.

Precautions:

• Avoid in patients allergic to aminoglycosides.

• Use with caution in kidney disease, hearing problems, or neuromuscular disorders.

• Regular monitoring of kidney function, hearing, and drug levels is advised.

• Use in pregnancy/lactation only if clearly needed and prescribed.

Drug Interactions:

• Increased toxicity with other aminoglycosides, vancomycin, amphotericin B, cyclosporine.

• Loop diuretics (furosemide, ethacrynic acid) → higher risk of ear damage.

• Neuromuscular blocking agents → enhanced muscle relaxation.
