Generic Composition:

• Glimepiride 2 mg (Sulfonylurea)

• Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg (Biguanide)

Description:

Glimester M2 Tablet is a combination oral anti-diabetic medicine used for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It contains Glimepiride, which increases insulin secretion from the pancreas, and Metformin, which reduces liver glucose production, slows intestinal glucose absorption, and improves insulin sensitivity.

Together, they provide comprehensive blood sugar control, targeting both fasting and postprandial glucose levels, and help prevent long-term diabetes complications.

Uses:

• Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (when diet, exercise, and single therapy are inadequate)

• Reduces risk of complications such as kidney damage, neuropathy, retinopathy, heart attack, and stroke

Mechanism of Action:

• Glimepiride (2 mg): Stimulates pancreatic beta cells to release insulin → lowers blood sugar

• Metformin (500 mg): Lowers glucose production in the liver, slows sugar absorption from intestines, improves insulin sensitivity

• Combined effect: Controls both fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels effectively

Dosage & Administration:

• Usually 1 tablet once or twice daily with meals (as prescribed by doctor)

• Take with food to reduce stomach upset and minimize risk of hypoglycemia

• Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew

• Regular monitoring of blood glucose and HbA1c is necessary

Common Side Effects:

• Hypoglycemia (low sugar) – sweating, shakiness, dizziness, hunger

• Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort (Metformin-related)

• Headache, weakness

• Weight gain (possible with Glimepiride)

Serious Side Effects (rare):

• Lactic acidosis (Metformin): muscle pain, fatigue, difficulty breathing

• Severe hypoglycemia (if meals are skipped or heavy exercise)

• Liver dysfunction – yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine

• Allergic reactions – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing

Warnings & Precautions:

• Not for Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis

• Avoid in severe kidney or liver impairment

• Use cautiously in elderly and heart patients

• Avoid alcohol (increases risk of lactic acidosis & hypoglycemia)

• Regular monitoring of blood sugar, kidney, and liver function is recommended
