Generic Name: Glimepiride 1 mg + Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg
Category: Oral Anti-Diabetic (Sulfonylurea + Biguanide Combination)

Description:

Gluconorm G1 Tablet is an oral anti-diabetic combination medicine used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It contains Glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) and Metformin (a biguanide).

  • Glimepiride (1 mg): Stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, thereby lowering blood sugar.

  • Metformin (500 mg): Reduces glucose production in the liver, decreases glucose absorption from the intestine, and improves insulin sensitivity.

Together, they provide better glycemic control, reduce blood sugar fluctuations, and lower the risk of diabetes-related complications.

Uses:

  • Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

  • Helps prevent complications such as kidney damage, neuropathy, retinopathy, heart disease, and stroke

Mechanism of Action:

  • Glimepiride: Increases insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells → lowers blood sugar

  • Metformin: Decreases hepatic glucose output, increases insulin sensitivity, and delays intestinal glucose absorption

  • Combined effect: Improves both fasting and post-meal blood sugar control

Dosage & Administration:

  • Usually taken once or twice daily with meals (as directed by doctor)

  • Must be taken with food to reduce the risk of stomach upset and hypoglycemia

  • Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew

  • Regular blood sugar monitoring is important

Common Side Effects:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – sweating, dizziness, hunger, shakiness

  • Nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset (Metformin-related)

  • Headache, weakness

  • Weight gain (possible with Glimepiride)

Serious Side Effects (rare):

  • Lactic acidosis (Metformin) – extreme tiredness, muscle pain, difficulty breathing

  • Severe hypoglycemia (especially if skipping meals or heavy exercise)

  • Liver problems – yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine

  • Allergic reactions – rash, swelling, difficulty breathing

Warnings & Precautions:

  • Not for Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis

  • Avoid in patients with severe kidney or liver disease

  • Use cautiously in elderly patients

  • Avoid alcohol (increases risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis)

  • Regular monitoring of blood glucose, HbA1c, kidney, and liver function is recommended
