Generic Name: Biphasic Insulin (30% Regular Human Insulin + 70% NPH Insulin)
Category: Injectable Anti-Diabetic (Insulin Preparation)

Description:

Huminsulin 30/70 is a premixed insulin injection used in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus (Type 1 and Type 2). It contains 30% soluble (regular) insulin and 70% isophane (NPH) insulin.

  • The regular insulin acts quickly to control blood sugar spikes after meals.

  • The NPH insulin provides a longer-lasting effect to maintain baseline sugar control between meals and overnight.

This combination ensures both immediate and sustained control of blood sugar throughout the day.

Uses:

  • Management of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

  • Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (when oral medicines are insufficient)

  • Control of blood sugar during surgery, infection, or other critical illness when oral drugs are not suitable

Mechanism of Action:

  • Regular Insulin (30%): Rapid-acting, lowers blood glucose by promoting glucose uptake into cells and inhibiting liver glucose production

  • NPH Insulin (70%): Intermediate-acting, maintains stable insulin levels for long-term control

Dosage & Administration:

  • Administered subcutaneously (under the skin) in areas such as the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm

  • Dose is individualized by the doctor depending on blood sugar levels, diet, and physical activity

  • Usually injected 15–30 minutes before meals

  • Rotate injection sites regularly to avoid skin problems (lipodystrophy)

Common Side Effects:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): sweating, hunger, dizziness, shakiness, confusion

  • Injection site pain, redness, or swelling

  • Weight gain

  • Temporary vision changes at the start of therapy

Serious Side Effects (rare):

  • Severe hypoglycemia → seizures, unconsciousness (requires immediate medical care)

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)

  • Lipodystrophy (skin thickening/thinning at injection site)

  • Low potassium levels (hypokalemia, rare)

Warnings & Precautions:

  • Not to be used during hypoglycemia episodes

  • Caution in patients with kidney, liver, or heart disease

  • Avoid alcohol (increases risk of low blood sugar)

  • Regular monitoring of blood glucose, HbA1c, and electrolytes is required

  • Always keep sugar/glucose source handy in case of low sugar attacks

  • Store insulin in the refrigerator (2–8°C) but do not freeze
