Description:

Jardiance 10 mg Tablet is an oral anti-diabetic medicine used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It contains Empagliflozin, which belongs to the class of SGLT2 inhibitors (Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter 2 inhibitors).

It works by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to increased excretion of sugar through urine. This helps lower blood sugar levels, reduce body weight, and improve overall glycemic control.

Apart from diabetes management, Jardiance is also prescribed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with Type 2 Diabetes and established heart disease, and to treat chronic heart failure.

Uses:

• Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (to improve blood sugar control)

• Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction

• Reduce risk of cardiovascular death in Type 2 diabetes patients with heart disease

• May aid in weight loss and blood pressure reduction

Mechanism of Action:

• Inhibits SGLT2 (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2) in the kidneys

• Prevents reabsorption of glucose into the blood

• Promotes glucose excretion via urine (glycosuria)

• Lowers blood sugar, improves HbA1c, and reduces body weight

Dosage & Administration:

• Standard dose: 10 mg once daily, with or without food

• May be increased to 25 mg once daily if required and tolerated

• Should be taken at the same time each day

• Adequate hydration is recommended to avoid dehydration

Common Side Effects:

• Increased urination

• Genital fungal infections (thrush, yeast infection)

• Urinary tract infection (UTI)

• Thirst, dry mouth

• Dizziness, low blood pressure (due to dehydration)

Serious Side Effects (rare):

• Ketoacidosis (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, rapid breathing)

• Severe urinary tract infection (pyelonephritis, urosepsis)

• Dehydration and fainting

• Kidney problems (rare)

• Fournier’s gangrene (very rare but serious infection)

Warnings & Precautions:

• Not for Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis

• Use with caution in patients with kidney disease, frequent UTIs, or dehydration

• Maintain good genital hygiene to prevent infections

• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption (increases risk of ketoacidosis)

• Monitor blood sugar, kidney function, and hydration status regularly
