Uses / Indications

Metolar XR 25mg Tablet is prescribed for:

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • Angina (chest pain due to reduced oxygen supply to the heart)

  • Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)

  • Heart Failure (mild to moderate, with other medicines)

  • Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) – reduces recurrence risk & improves survival

  • Migraine prevention (off-label)

  • Thyrotoxicosis symptoms (off-label)


Mechanism of Action

  • Metoprolol is a Beta-1 Selective Blocker.

  • Slows down the heart rate, reduces pumping force → lowers BP.

  • Reduces oxygen demand of the heart → relieves angina.

  • Stabilizes abnormal heart rhythms.

  • XR (Extended-Release) formulation → provides 24-hour coverage with once-daily dose.


Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose: 25–200 mg once daily, depending on condition.

  • 25 mg once daily is a common starting dose.

  • Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew (extended-release).

  • Take with or just after meals.

  • Do not discontinue suddenly – may cause rebound hypertension, angina, or arrhythmias.


Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Dizziness, tiredness

  • Cold hands/feet

Serious but rare:
