Composition

Each extended-release tablet contains:

Uses / Indications

Metolar XR 50mg Tablet is prescribed for:

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • Angina (chest pain from reduced oxygen supply to the heart)

  • Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)

  • Heart Failure (as part of combination therapy)

  • Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) – prevention of recurrence & improved survival

  • Migraine prevention (off-label use)

  • Thyrotoxicosis (symptomatic relief) – off-label


Mechanism of Action

  • Metoprolol is a Beta-1 Selective Blocker.

  • Lowers heart rate, cardiac output, and workload → reduces BP.

  • Improves oxygen balance in the heart → prevents angina.

  • Stabilizes heart rhythm and protects after heart attack.

  • XR (Extended-Release) formulation → provides 24-hour effect with once-daily dosing.


Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose: 25–200 mg once daily (depending on condition).

  • 50 mg once daily is a common starting or maintenance dose for hypertension & angina.

  • Swallow whole with water – do not crush or chew.

  • Take with or immediately after meals.

  • Do not stop suddenly – may cause rebound hypertension, angina, or arrhythmias.


Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Dizziness, fatigue

  • Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)

  • Cold hands/feet

  • Nausea, stomach upset

  • Sleep disturbance

Serious but rare:

  • Severe bradycardia or hypotension

  • Worsening heart failure
