Metrogyl 200 Tablet is an antibacterial and antiprotozoal medicine used to treat amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and infections caused by anaerobic bacteria (dental, abdominal, pelvic, skin & soft tissue). It works by damaging the DNA of microbes, stopping their growth.

Composition

Each tablet contains:

  • Metronidazole 200 mg

  • Excipients: Starch, lactose, povidone, magnesium stearate, talc & coloring agents


Mechanism of Action

Metronidazole is reduced inside anaerobic bacteria & protozoa, producing toxic free radicals.
These radicals damage DNA structure, inhibit nucleic acid synthesis → cell death.


Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Rapid, ~100% bioavailability

  • Distribution: Wide (CNS, placenta, breast milk)

  • Protein Binding: <20%

  • Metabolism: Liver (oxidation & glucuronidation)

  • Half-life: ~8 hrs

  • Excretion: Mainly urine, some feces


Indications / Uses

Protozoal Infections

  • Amoebiasis (intestinal & hepatic)

  • Giardiasis

  • Trichomoniasis

Anaerobic Infections

  • Intra-abdominal infections

  • Pelvic infections

  • Dental/orodental infections

  • Septicemia, bone & joint infections

  • Skin & soft tissue anaerobic infections

Other Uses

  • Bacterial vaginosis

  • Surgical prophylaxis (colorectal, gynecological, abdominal)

  • H. pylori eradication (combination therapy)


Dosage & Administration

(As per physician’s direction)

  • Adults: 400–800 mg every 8–12 hrs

  • Amoebiasis: 600–800 mg thrice daily for 5–10 days

  • Trichomoniasis: 2 g single dose or divided regimen

  • Children: 20–30 mg/kg/day in divided doses

Route: Oral
Advice: Take after meals to reduce gastric upset


Adverse Effects

Common: Nausea, metallic taste, abdominal pain, headache
Uncommon: Dry mouth, dark urine, oral thrush
Serious: Peripheral neuropathy, seizures, blood dyscrasias, allergic reactions


Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to metronidazole/nitroimidazoles

  • First trimester of pregnancy (unless essential)

  • Alcohol consumption during & 48 hrs after therapy


Precautions

  • Avoid alcohol → severe disulfiram-like reaction

  • Use cautiously in liver/kidney disease

  • Monitor in neurological disorders

  • Crosses placenta & milk → caution in pregnancy & breastfeeding


Drug Interactions

  • Alcohol (serious reaction)

  • Warfarin (↑ bleeding risk)

  • Disulfiram (psychotic reactions)

  • Lithium (↑ toxicity)

  • Phenytoin/Phenobarbital (↓ metronidazole effect)

  • Cimetidine (↑ plasma levels)


Overdose

  • Symptoms: Seizures, ataxia, nausea, neuropathy

  • Treatment: Supportive & symptomatic care. No specific antidote.
