Uses / Indications

  • Protozoal Infections

    • Intestinal & hepatic amoebiasis

    • Giardiasis

    • Trichomoniasis

  • Anaerobic Bacterial Infections

    • Intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, abscess)

    • Pelvic infections (endometritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, vaginal vault sepsis)

    • Dental/orodental infections (gingivitis, abscess, periodontitis)

    • Septicemia caused by anaerobes

    • Skin, soft tissue, bone & joint anaerobic infections

  • Other Indications

    • Bacterial vaginosis

    • Surgical prophylaxis (colorectal, gynecological, abdominal surgery)

    • H. pylori eradication (in combination therapy)


Dosage (General Guidance)

(Strictly as directed by physician)

  • Adults: 600–800 mg every 8–12 hrs depending on severity

  • Amoebiasis: 800 mg TDS for 5–10 days

  • Trichomoniasis: 2 g single dose or divided doses

  • Children: 20–30 mg/kg/day in divided doses

Route: Oral
Advice: Take after meals to minimize gastric upset


Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort

  • Metallic/bitter taste

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Dry mouth, dark-colored urine (harmless)

  • Rare: Peripheral neuropathy, seizures, allergic reactions, leukopenia


Precautions / Warnings

  • Alcohol: Avoid during treatment & 48 hrs after → severe disulfiram-like reaction

  • Pregnancy: Avoid in 1st trimester unless essential

  • Breastfeeding: Passes into milk – consult doctor before use

  • Liver/Kidney Impairment: Dose adjustment may be required

  • Neurological Disorders: Caution in patients with seizures/neuropathy


Drug Interactions

  • Alcohol (dangerous reaction)

  • Warfarin (↑ bleeding risk)

  • Disulfiram (psychotic reactions)

  • Lithium (↑ toxicity)

  • Phenytoin/Phenobarbital (↓ metronidazole levels)

  • Cimetidine (↑ plasma concentration)
