Uses / Indications

Metrogyl Plus Tablet is indicated for the treatment of amoebiasis:

• Intestinal amoebiasis (dysentery, colitis)

• Extra-intestinal amoebiasis (including liver abscess)

• Asymptomatic cyst passers (carriers of E. histolytica)

• Metronidazole kills the trophozoites (tissue form)

• Diloxanide Furoate eliminates the cysts in the intestine
  ➡️ Together, they provide complete eradication of amoebiasis.

Dosage (General Guidance)

(As per physician’s advice)

• Adults: 1 tablet twice daily for 5–10 days

• Children: Dose adjusted by weight (not commonly recommended under 12 yrs without doctor’s advice)

Route: Oral
Advice: Take after meals with water

Side Effects

• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain

• Metallic taste, dry mouth

• Headache, dizziness

• Rare: Rash, pruritus, peripheral neuropathy (metronidazole-related)

Precautions / Warnings

• Avoid alcohol during & 48 hrs after treatment (disulfiram-like reaction)

• Not recommended in pregnancy (especially 1st trimester) unless essential

• Avoid in breastfeeding unless advised by physician

• Use cautiously in liver disease and neurological disorders

Drug Interactions

• Alcohol (severe reaction)

• Warfarin (↑ bleeding risk)

• Lithium (↑ toxicity)

• Phenytoin/Phenobarbital (↓ efficacy of metronidazole)

• Cimetidine (↑ plasma levels)
