Uses / Indications

• Protozoal infections

  • Amoebiasis (intestinal & hepatic)

  • Giardiasis

  • Trichomoniasis

• Anaerobic bacterial infections (in children or patients unable to take tablets)

  • Dental/orodental infections

  • Abdominal & pelvic infections

  • Skin & soft tissue anaerobic infections

• Other uses

  • Bacterial vaginosis (in pediatric/adolescent cases)

  • Surgical prophylaxis (when oral suspension is indicated)

Dosage (General Guidance)

(To be given strictly as per physician’s advice)

• Children:

  • 20–30 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses (amoebiasis/giardiasis)

  • Duration: 5–10 days (as per indication)

• Adults:

  • 400–800 mg every 8–12 hrs (tablet preferred, but suspension may be used if needed)

Route: Oral
Advice: Shake bottle well before use; take after meals

Side Effects

• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain

• Metallic/bitter taste

• Headache, dizziness

• Dark-colored urine (harmless)

• Rare: Seizures, neuropathy, allergic reactions

Precautions / Warnings

• Avoid alcohol during treatment & 48 hrs after

• Use cautiously in liver/kidney impairment

• Avoid in first trimester of pregnancy unless essential

• Crosses placenta & enters breast milk

• Monitor in patients with neurological disorders

Drug Interactions

• Alcohol (disulfiram-like reaction)

• Warfarin (↑ bleeding risk)

• Disulfiram (psychotic reactions)

• Lithium (↑ toxicity)

• Phenytoin/Phenobarbital (↓ efficacy of metronidazole)

• Cimetidine (↑ plasma levels)
