Dosage & Administration
-
Route: Intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) (depending on situation)
-
Preparation: The powdered form is reconstituted with sterile diluent (sterile water or normal saline).
-
Rate / Infusion:
– IV injection: the reconstituted solution is typically injected slowly (e.g., over 3–5 minutes)
– IV infusion: can also be given as a drip over 20–60 minutes depending on protocol.
– IM injection: given deep into a large muscle mass. -
Dose: The dose depends on the infection type, severity, and patient’s renal function. For example, in adults common regimens are 1 g every 6–8 hours for serious infections.
-
Adjustment: In patients with renal impairment, dose reduction or extension of dosing interval may be required.
Side Effects / Adverse Reactions
