Composition

Each tablet contains:

• Telmisartan 40 mg (Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker – ARB)

• Amlodipine 5 mg (Calcium Channel Blocker – CCB)

Uses / Indications

Telma-AM 40/5 Tablet is prescribed for:

• Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) – especially in patients not controlled with single-drug therapy.

• Reducing the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney complications due to high BP.

• Can be used in patients with Type 2 Diabetes and hypertension for added cardiovascular protection.

Mechanism of Action

• Telmisartan (ARB): Blocks angiotensin II receptors → prevents blood vessel narrowing → lowers BP.

• Amlodipine (CCB): Relaxes and dilates blood vessels by blocking calcium entry → improves blood flow and reduces heart’s workload.

• Together, they provide dual action for better and sustained blood pressure control.

Dosage & Administration

• Usual adult dose: 1 tablet once daily.

• Should be taken at the same time every day.

• Can be taken with or without food.

• Do not discontinue without doctor’s advice.

Side Effects

Common side effects:

• Dizziness, headache

• Swelling of ankles/feet (due to amlodipine)

• Tiredness, weakness

• Flushing, stomach upset

Serious but rare:

• Severe low BP

• High potassium levels (hyperkalemia)

• Kidney function impairment

• Severe allergic reaction (swelling, difficulty breathing)

Precautions & Warnings

• Use cautiously in patients with:

  • Kidney or liver disease

  • Heart failure or heart rhythm problems

  • Electrolyte imbalance (high potassium)

• Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

• Avoid alcohol (may worsen dizziness).

• Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolytes is advised.

Drug Interactions

• Other antihypertensive medicines (additive effect)

• Potassium supplements / potassium-sparing diuretics

• NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac – may reduce effectiveness & affect kidneys)

• Lithium (risk of toxicity)
