• Telmisartan 20 mg

Uses / Indications

Telsar 20mg Tablet is prescribed for:

• Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) – lowers and maintains normal blood pressure.

• Reduces long-term risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney damage caused by high BP.

• Protects kidney function in patients with Type 2 Diabetes and high BP.

• May be given alone or in combination therapy with other blood pressure medicines.

Mechanism of Action

• Telmisartan is an Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB).

• Blocks angiotensin II (a hormone that tightens blood vessels).

• Causes arteries to relax and widen → reduces blood pressure.

• Improves blood flow and reduces strain on the heart.

Dosage & Administration

• Usual adult dose: 20 mg once daily.

• Depending on BP response, dose may be increased to 40–80 mg daily.

• Can be taken with or without food.

• Should be taken at the same time each day.

• Do not discontinue suddenly without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects

Common side effects:

• Dizziness, lightheadedness

• Headache, fatigue

• Stomach upset, diarrhea

• Muscle cramps, back pain

Serious but rare:

• Severe low blood pressure

• High potassium levels (hyperkalemia)

• Kidney function problems

• Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)

Precautions & Warnings

• Use carefully if you have:

  • Kidney or liver disease

  • Heart failure

  • Electrolyte imbalance (high potassium)

• Not safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

• Avoid alcohol (can worsen dizziness).

Drug Interactions

• Potassium supplements / potassium-sparing diuretics

• NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac – may reduce effect & harm kidneys)

• Lithium (risk of increased toxicity)
