Generic Composition:
-
Teneligliptin 20 mg (DPP-4 Inhibitor)
-
Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg (Biguanide)
Category: Oral Anti-Diabetic (Dual Combination)
Description:
Tenepla-M 20/500 Tablet is an oral anti-diabetic medicine used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and single therapy are insufficient to control blood sugar.
-
Teneligliptin (DPP-4 inhibitor) works by increasing incretin hormones, which stimulate insulin secretion (only when blood sugar is high) and suppress glucagon release, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
-
Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves the body’s insulin sensitivity.
Together, they provide effective control of fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications.
Uses:
-
Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
-
Helps lower fasting and postprandial glucose
-
Reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications (kidney disease, nerve damage, heart disease, and eye problems)
Mechanism of Action:
-
Teneligliptin (20 mg): Inhibits DPP-4 enzyme → prolongs incretin activity → increases insulin release & decreases glucagon → lowers blood sugar
-
Metformin (500 mg): Reduces liver glucose output, slows intestinal glucose absorption, enhances insulin sensitivity
-
Combined effect: Comprehensive glycemic control
Dosage & Administration:
-
Typically 1 tablet once or twice daily with meals (as prescribed by doctor)
-
Take with food to reduce gastric side effects (from Metformin)
-
Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew
-
Regular monitoring of blood sugar and HbA1c is required
Common Side Effects:
-
Nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset (Metformin-related)
-
Headache, mild throat/respiratory infections (Teneligliptin-related)
-
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar – more likely with other anti-diabetics)
-
Fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite
Serious Side Effects (rare):
-
Lactic acidosis (Metformin): muscle pain, tiredness, difficulty breathing
-
Pancreatitis (rare with Teneligliptin): severe stomach pain, vomiting
-
Liver problems: yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine
-
Allergic reactions: swelling, rash, breathing difficulty
Warnings & Precautions:
-
Not for Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
-
Avoid in severe kidney or liver disease
-
Avoid alcohol (increases lactic acidosis risk with Metformin)
-
Use cautiously in elderly and heart patients
-
Regular monitoring of blood glucose, kidney, and liver function is essential
