Description:

Xigduo 10/1000 mg Tablet is a combination anti-diabetic medicine used in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It contains Dapagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, and Metformin, a biguanide.

• Dapagliflozin works by blocking SGLT2 proteins in the kidneys, preventing glucose reabsorption and increasing glucose excretion in urine.

• Metformin works by reducing glucose production in the liver, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity in the body.

Together, they provide better blood sugar control, promote weight reduction, and reduce the risk of diabetes-related heart and kidney complications.

Uses:

• Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (when diet and exercise alone are not enough)

• Helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications in diabetic patients

• Provides weight management and blood pressure-lowering benefits

Mechanism of Action:

• Dapagliflozin (10 mg): Inhibits SGLT2, causing more glucose to be excreted through urine

• Metformin (1000 mg): Lowers liver glucose production, slows intestinal absorption, improves insulin action

• Combined effect: Better glycemic control, weight loss, and reduced risk of complications

Dosage & Administration:

• Usual dose: 1 tablet once daily, or as prescribed by doctor

• Should be taken with food to reduce stomach upset from Metformin

• Adequate hydration should be maintained

• Dose adjustments may be needed in patients with kidney or liver disease

Common Side Effects:

• Increased urination

• Genital fungal infections (yeast infections)

• Urinary tract infection (UTI)

• Nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain (due to Metformin)

• Headache, dizziness

• Thirst, dehydration

Serious Side Effects (rare):

• Lactic acidosis (rare, but serious with Metformin) – fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing

• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) – nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, rapid breathing

• Severe UTI or kidney problems

• Fournier’s gangrene (rare but serious infection in genital area)

Warnings & Precautions:

• Not for Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis

• Avoid in severe kidney or liver disease

• Regular monitoring of blood sugar, kidney function, and HbA1c is required

• Maintain good hydration to prevent dehydration and dizziness

• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption (increases risk of lactic acidosis with Metformin)

• Maintain proper genital hygiene to reduce infection risk
